Some people buy sports cars. Others spend six figures on a piece of childhood joy, and honestly, I can respect the latter.
The red, rocket-tank dream machine that launched Pee-Wee Herman across the country in Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure just sold at auction for a staggering $125,000. That’s right, a fan paid more than a hundred grand for the bicycle that Paul Reubens turned into a pop culture icon.
The bike, one of 14 custom-made for the 1985 film, was used in various stunt scenes throughout the movie and still holds all of its original elements.
A rep for Van Eaton Galleries told TMZ, “The screen-used stunt bike in Pee-wee’s Big Adventure was sold at auction for $125,000.” It’s reportedly been restored multiple times, but all its cinematic DNA remains intact.
Pee-wee’s Big Adventure marked the big-screen debut of Paul Reubens’ beloved character, and it also introduced audiences to director Tim Burton, who was brought on after impressing Reubens and the producers with his shorts Vincent and Frankenweenie.
The film raked in over $40 million at the box office and went on to inspire two sequels: 1988’s Big Top Pee-wee and 2016’s Pee-wee’s Big Holiday.
