It’s starting to sound like the worlds of Alien and Predator are on a crash course once again, and this time, it could be a lot more connected than before.
TheAlien: Romulus sequel reportedly won’t just continue the terror with Xenomorphs. According to a new report, the next chapter will feature a Predator.
This is coming on the heels of Predator: Badlands‘ teaser trailer, which quietly confirmed that the Alien and Predator franchises do, in fact, exist in the same universe with Elle Fanning playing twin synthetics made by Weyland-Yutan.
Longtime fans will remember that the connection first popped up way back in Predator 2 (1990), when eagle-eyed viewers spotted a Xenomorph skull hanging in a Predator’s trophy case.
Even though we had two crossover films, Alien vs. Predator (2004) and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007), they were later scrubbed from the Alien timeline thanks to Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017).
But now, it looks like that shared DNA is coming back in a much bigger, official way. Industry scooper Jeff Sneider recently dropped the news on The Hot Mic podcast (at 44:22), telling co-host John Rocha:
“I had been told that the script for Fede Álvarez’s follow-up to Alien: Romulus features a Predator.”
Sneider also teased that Alien and Predator were “mashing together,” and added, “These worlds are colliding.”
If this all pans out, it sounds like we’re heading toward a third full-blown Alien vs. Predator film, but done in a completely different way. Fede Álvarez himself hinted at wanting to team up with Prey director Dan Trachtenberg for a project like this. Last year, he said:
“Maybe it’s something I have to co-direct with my buddy Dan. Maybe we should do like Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez did with Dusk Till Dawn. I’ll direct a half, and he’ll direct another half.”
That idea definitely sounds pretty cool. It also lines up with what Steve Asbell, President of 20th Century Studios previously said there would “probably” be another crossover, but clarified it wouldn’t be what people expect. According to Asbell, future mashups would be
“organically created out of these two franchises.”
With Prey and early buzz for Alien: Romulus both signaling a serious creative comeback for their respective series, this could be the right time to finally get the Alien vs. Predator movie fans deserve, one that’s built with real care.
