Actress Scarlett Johansson played Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow in the MCU for over a decade, making her first appearance in Iron-Man 2 (2010), in which she was under cover, then we saw her reach her full potential in The Avengers (2012).
She went on to tell a full and rich story as the character, and she met her end in a pure moment of sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame (2019). Two years later, we were given a full film based on Black Widow (2021) and her backstory, but that was the final time we saw her.
While Endgame was also a final chapter for Tony Stark aka Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), and Steve Rogers aka Captain America (Chris Evans), we are gearing up to see Downey return to play Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday (2026), and we have seen Evans return to play an old character, Johnny Storm, in last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine.
It’s safe to bet we may see more familiar faces as we head into these next two Avengers movies, as they are the final films in the multiverse saga, so even characters who have died may pop up as variants from other universes. But Johansson has been adamant in her conviction that she will not be returning. Although, she now admits there is one capacity in which she would be willing to return to a Marvel set.
During an interview with Deadline at Cannes Film Festival, the outlet asked if she would consider directing a big action film, or a Marvel film specifically, she said:
“I think the movies that I like that are big action movies also have the human connectivity piece. Even producing Black Widow and being a part of the production of that, and the development of the story, and the story between Natasha and Yelena… [there is] I think, a way of doing it, a way of maintaining the integrity of the idea of human connection, family, disappointment, all of the things that were themes in [Eleanor the Great], and doing it in a giant way in a giant universe — there’s ways of doing that… So, yeah, definitely, it could be, it would be fun.”
It would be cool to welcome Scarjo back as a director. She just made her feature directorial debut with the drama Eleanor the Great, and she surely knows her way around a Marvel set. Maybe we will see her sign on in the next MCU Saga.
