Star Wars: Skeleton Crew creator Jon Watts has finally broken his silence about his future in the Star Wars galaxy, and while he’s playing it close to the chest, he wants back in.
During a moderated panel at the Mediterrane Film Festival, Watts was asked about returning to Star Wars after developing Skeleton Crew, the coming-of-age sci-fi series he co-created with Christopher Ford.
His answer is carefully vague, but definitely loaded.
“I love Star Wars. I would love to do more Star Wars and I can’t say anything more. I always get in trouble when I do these interviews and I always end up saying something, like, I get in trouble and shouldn’t have said that.”
When pressed further, specifically about the possibility of more Skeleton Crew, Watts responded with:
“I can’t say exactly what it might be if it were even a thing.”
So, he’s either actively working on something or in talks to do so, and the NDA gods of Lucasfilm are keeping him muzzled.
Skeleton Crew carved out its own identity in the Star Wars universe with a tone that mixed Amblin-style adventure with space opera charm. Watts and Ford pitched it to Kathleen Kennedy as “Star Wars meets The Goonies,” and that spirit absolutely came through in the final product.
It was about four kids, lost in the galaxy, trying to get home. That kind of emotional simplicity hit a different chord, and fans enjoyed it for the most part.
The series also gave us Jude Law as Jod Na Nawood, a mysterious Force-wielding pirate with just enough grit to balance the show’s sense of wonder. I liked the whole vibe and tone of the show. It expanded Star Wars without feeling disconnected, adding new planets, creatures like the Myykians, and fresh story perspectives within the familiar post-Return of the Jedi timeline.
So, whether it’s more Skeleton Crew or something entirely new, it’s safe to say Watts is still in the orbit of Lucasfilm.
