Paramount closed out its big Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con with the first trailer for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The new series takes us back to the classroom, but this time in the 32nd century, following the events of Star Trek: Discovery.

The show centers on the first new class of cadets to join the iconic academy in over a hundred years as the Federation rebuilds in the aftermath of “The Burn.”

The trailer is loaded with nods to Star Trek lore, from academy wing names to coursework on legends like Captain Sisko. It also introduces an exciting mix of familiar faces and fresh recruits, setting the stage for a new generation of Starfleet officers.

Leading the charge is Holly Hunter, who stars as Nahla Ake, the long-lived half-Lanthanite chancellor of Starfleet Academy and captain of the U.S.S. Athena. Fans of Strange New Worlds will recognize the species from Commander Pelia, played by Carol Kane.

Ake is joined by some Trek veterans as Tig Notaro returns as Jett Reno from Discovery, and Robert Picardo reprises his beloved role as the Emergency Medical Hologram, the Doctor, from Voyager. Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly) and Oded Fehr (Admiral Vance) will also make guest appearances.

Another addition to the senior staff is Gina Yashere as Lura Thok, the cadet master and first officer of the Athena. Thok’s lineage is one for the history books—she’s half-Klingon and half-Jem’Hadar.

Of course, the heart of the series lies with its cadets. Here’s the new crew of hopefuls:

  • Sandro Rosta plays Caleb Mir, a troubled orphan with ties to Chancellor Ake, struggling to find his path in Starfleet.

  • Karim Diané stars as Jay-Den Kraag, a Klingon science cadet determined to become a medical officer.

  • Kerrice Brooks is Sam, the first member of her species, the Kasqians, to join Starfleet in the operations division.

  • George Hawkins portrays Darem Reymi, a command-track cadet from an elite Khionian family.

  • Bella Shepard plays Genesis Lythe, another command cadet from Dar-Sha and the daughter of a Starfleet admiral determined to make her own mark.

  • Zoë Steiner rounds out the cast as Tarima Sadal, the daughter of the Betazed president, though it’s unclear if she’s a student at the academy or not.

And because no Star Trek series is complete without a villain, the trailer teases Paul Giamatti as Nus Braka, a shady gang leader who happens to be a Klingon/Tellarite hybrid. Braka has mysterious ties to one of the cadets, setting the stage for some serious drama.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will debut on Paramount+ in early 2026, and the series is already renewed for a second season.
