Steven Knight has been cooking up something big with the Peaky Blinders movie, and if he has his way, fans won’t just be watching it at home sitting on their couches.
The creator of the hit series recently teased the possibility of a theatrical release before the film lands on Netflix, which would be awesome!
Speaking with The Playlist, Knight confirmed that production had wrapped late last year:
“We wrapped on December 13th. We’ve got Barry Keoghan, Tim Roth, Rebecca Ferguson, and obviously Cillian Murphy and Stephen Graham. And I have to say, it is mind-blowingly good.”
He went on to say: “I really want the Peaky fans who have been a big part of this to be watching it all together in one building. The communication has all been virtual, but I do want this to be in cinemas so that people can sit there together and watch this thing happen.”
I love that he’s pushing for a proper theatrical release, though Netflix’s actual plans for distribution have not been revealed.
Deadline has reached out to both Knight and the streaming giant for clarification, but as of now, there’s no official word on how it’ll roll out.
Beyond the film, Knight aLeo isn’t ruling out a return to Peaky Blinders’ world down the line. When asked about the possibility of more stories set in his inter-war Birmingham underworld, he left the door wide open:
“This is a fitting end to the first chapter. As long as there’s an appetite for it and I’ve got stories to tell, then why not?”
That “first chapter” comment is definitely interesting as it suggests the movie might close a major arc but not necessarily be the last time we see these characters.
When previously asked if the film would be the final installment, Knight shared: “This part, yes. I’m not allowed to announce it, but I’m just saying that the world of Peaky will continue.”
There are still no story details, but Knight did say at one point that the story would be set during World War II. We’ll just have to wait and see what the story will entail.
Outside of Peaky, Knight has been keeping busy with other historical dramas. His series SAS Rogue Heroes just wrapped its second season on the BBC, and his latest project, A Thousand Blows, recently debuted on Disney+.
