Apple TV+ isn’t ready to say goodbye to Ted Lasso. The Emmy-winning comedy is officially returning for a fourth season, with Jason Sudeikis back as both star and executive producer. And this time, Coach Lasso will be taking on a new job, coaching a women’s team.
Juno Temple, who played Keeley Jones, is currently in negotiations to return alongside confirmed cast members Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca), Brett Goldstein (Roy), and Jeremy Swift (Leslie). Temple’s scheduling have reportedly been an issue, but sources are optimistic she’ll be back.
Meanwhile, the writing team has been hard at work for months, with Sudeikis leading the room alongside new co-showrunner Jack Burditt (Modern Family, 30 Rock). Other key writers and producers from past seasons including Brendan Hunt (Coach Beard) and Joe Kelly are also back, with Hunt’s acting deal expected to be finalized soon.
Season 4 is set to pick up where the last season left off, with the premiere episode filming in Kansas, likely Kansas City, before returning to the UK. This marks the first time Ted Lasso will actually shoot in Sudeikis’ home state, as previous Kansas-set scenes were filmed in California.
Sudeikis said in a statement: “As we all continue to live in a world where so many factors have conditioned us to ‘look before we leap,’ in season four, the folks at AFC Richmond learn to LEAP BEFORE THEY LOOK, discovering that wherever they land, it’s exactly where they’re meant to be.”
Season 4 may focus on AFC Richmond’s newly formed women’s team, spearheaded by Keeley and Rebecca. On a recent episode of New Heights, Sudeikis confirmed that Lasso will, in fact, be coaching a women’s team this season.
For a while, the future of Ted Lasso remained uncertain. Sudeikis had originally envisioned a three-season arc and stuck to that plan, even as the show became a massive success. But he never fully ruled out a return, and with Warner Bros. TV and Apple TV+ eager to keep it going, negotiations came down to securing the right deals.
Now, with the pieces in place, Season 4 is moving forward, with production looking to start in July, and casting for new roles is expected soon.
Matt Cherniss, Apple TV+’s head of programming, expressed excitement over the show’s continuation: “Ted Lasso has been nothing short of a juggernaut, inspiring a passionate fanbase all over the world, and delivering endless joy and laughter, all while spreading kindness, compassion, and unwavering belief.”
Warner Bros. Television CEO Channing Dungey echoed the sentiment: “If ever there was a show the world needed more of right now, it would be Ted Lasso… We — along with countless fans around the globe — have been rooting for another season, and it is an incredible feeling to be able to say, ‘Yes, it’s happening!’”
Ted Lasso is such a great show with its perfect mix of humor, heart, and optimism. Season 4 promises to bring a fresh perspective while keeping the spirit of the show alive.
