Well, here’s one you probably didn’t see coming, Police Academy legend Steve Guttenberg is trading laughs for chills as he steps into the role of a real-life serial killer in Lifetime’s upcoming true crime film Kidnapped by a Killer: The Heather Robinson Story.
Joining Guttenberg in this unsettling tale are Jana Kramer (One Tree Hill, A Cowboy Christmas Romance) as a determined investigator, and Rachel Stubington (Shrinking) as Heather Robinson, the woman at the center of this shocking true story.
The film is based on the harrowing real-life experience of Heather Robinson, “who was abducted as a baby and raised by the family of a serial killer who was convicted of murdering her mother.
Heather (Stubington) grew up in a loving family in Illinois. “By the time she was a teen, she had long known that she had been adopted as an infant by her parents. But in 2000, the then-15-year-old’s world was shattered when she learned that the man she knew as her uncle, John Robinson (Guttenberg), was a serial killer accused of murdering multiple women in the Kansas City area, including her biological mother, Lisa Stasi.
“After her uncle’s arrest, Heather learns the shocking truth about her birth mother’s disappearance. Kramer portrays an investigator working on the case.”
Guttenberg, who audiences know from comedies like Three Men and a Baby, Short Circuit, and Diner, is clearly taking a major turn here. And while this casting might raise some eyebrows, it’s cool to see Guttenberg dive into darker territory.
The project comes from Marwar Junction Productions and Allegheny Image Factory, with Joseph Freed and Allison Berkley executive producing alongside Jeffrey Tinnell and Robert Tinnell, Melissa Moore, and Maritte Lee Go.
The film is directed by Lee Gabiana from a script by Shawn Linden and Pamela Gray.
Whether you grew up watching Guttenberg in family-friendly project or you’re just a sucker for a good true crime dramatization, Kidnapped by a Killer looks like one to keep on your radar.
The movie is set to premiere Saturday, June 7 at 8/7c.
