Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings, Sin City) recently calls out a film that was made for completely missing the mark, and if he had the power to erase one movie from existence it would be Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005).

Wood shared his opinion on this back in 2017 during Movie Fights (via: GamesRadar+), a debate-style panel show from Screen Junkies, and he didn’t hold back on sharing his thoughts.

“The version of Willy Wonka in Tim Burton’s film is heinous, and terrifying,” he said. “There’s nothing pure or beautiful about it.”

Wood was clearly not a fan of Burton’s take and said that Burton’s version of the children’s story “destroyed the book and destroyed the original film.”

While acknowledging that Burton “very much took it in his own direction,” Wood felt the result was no where near what made the original story so fun and magical.

While I also wasn’t a fan of the movie, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory wasn’t a failure. It still holds an 83% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, but the audience score sits at a much lower 51%.

A big part of the divide came down to Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Wonka, which traded Wilder’s charming, enigmatic presence for an awkward, unsettling recluse with a bizarre backstory about his candy-hating father. It was a big contrast to hearing Wilder sing Pure Imagination.

If you could erase one movie from existance, what one would you choose?
