Things are heating up for A$AP Rocky as jury selection kicked off on Tuesday in his trial for allegedly firing a gun at a former friend. The stakes are high—if convicted, the rapper could face up to 24 years behind bars—which could explain why the rapper’s lawyer introduced a previously undisclosed legal strategy for the case.
The 36-year-old hip-hop star, known for his music, fashion ventures and being Rihanna’s longtime partner, has pleaded not guilty to two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm. His lawyer maintains that Rocky is innocent and committed no crime.

In fact, the Associated Press reported that Rocky’s lawyer said testimony would prove that the gun involved wasn’t even real.
“Attorney Joe Tacopina also revealed in court Tuesday that the defense plans to call witnesses to testify that a firearm seen on a security video is a ‘starter pistol’ that Rocky carried as a prop for security purposes,” according to the Associated Press.
It was in that context that Rocky turned down a plea deal that would have jailed him for 180 days.
Rocky’s high-profile life could take a serious turn with this case. He’s set to co-chair the Met Gala in May and has a major role in an upcoming Spike Lee film alongside Denzel Washington. But with this trial looming, those plans might be overshadowed by the potential of a lengthy prison sentence.
The incident in question dates back to Nov. 6, 2021, in Hollywood. Terell Ephron, a childhood friend of Rocky, testified that their relationship had soured before the alleged altercation. Ephron claims Rocky fired at him, with bullets grazing his knuckles. A judge ruled in 2023 that there was enough evidence for the case to go to trial.
Superior Court Judge Mark Arnold is keeping things tight in the courtroom. He’s limiting how long attorneys can question jurors and reminding them to remain impartial, saying, “Regardless of who a defendant is, whether they’re the richest person in the world or the poorest person, everybody is to be treated the same.”
As for Rihanna, it’s unclear if she’ll be showing up in court to support Rocky. His lawyer has hinted that it’s unlikely. Media cameras will be allowed to capture the entire trial, so fans and critics alike will be watching closely.
