One day Paramount Pictures and producer J.J. Abrams will get their shit together and finally get Star Trek 4 into production. It’s been more than eight years since Star Trek Beyond was released.
While we haven’t seen a movie in a long time, fans have been enjoying all the series that have been developed in that time. The shows have been great!
The last thing we heard about about Star Trek 4 is that the studio hired Steve Yockey, creator of the Max series The Flight Attendant, to work on the script.
During a recent interview with Deadline, Zoe Saldaña, who played Lieutenant Nyota Uhura in all three films of the rebooted franchise, shared some ideas of what she’d like to see in the next film, the direction the story should go.
She said: “It’s been a minute since I reconnected with Star Trek and all the characters’ journeys, but Uhura and Spock were always sort of drawn to each other, it just makes sense to see what is the next step in their relationship and their work relationship as well.”
Saldaña also talked about on her anticipation for Star Trek 4, saying: “I wish we were able to do it sooner rather than later. I feel like a lot of us have a full head of gray hair, so we need to do this quickly, if this is the same cast that’s going to reprise it again.”
There are still no story details to share on the next film, but the movie is intended to be the final chapter for the cast that rebooted the franchise with 2009’s Star Trek.
If this movie does move forward, there’s no doubt that we’ll see how the relationship between Uhura and Spoke has evolved over time.
When Star Trek 4 was brought up in a previous interview with Saldaña, she said: “I know. I mean I heard what you heard in the trades. I just heard that they’re gearing up to do a new one with a younger sort of, take on it.
“Like it’s been off. I don’t know if it’s if it’s from the before or the after, but that they really still hope to grab all of us veterans and bring us back for one last round.
“Listen, I know it’s a lot to wrangle a whole bunch of people with busy schedules. But, working with J.J. Abrams, and for J.J. Abrams at Bad Robot was always just a wonderful and beautiful experience for me. So, if I get to do that one last time, I would be so grateful.”
Chris Pine was previously asked about the next Star. Trek film and he feels the franchise is cursed, saying: “After the last one came out and didn’t do the $1 billion that everybody wanted it to do, and then Anton, [Yelchin, who played Chekov] passed away, I don’t know, it just seemed…” He added later that the franchise “feels like it’s cursed.”
He went on to talk about his frustration, saying: “I would say it’s frustrating. It doesn’t really foster the greatest sense of partnership, but it’s how it’s always been. I love the character. I love the people. I love the franchise. But to try to change the system in which things are created – I just can’t do it. I don’t have the energy.”
Maybe one day Star Trek 4 will get made, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen anytime soon.
